Fort Wayne first graders put on opera

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - First grade students at Adams Elementary will perform two operas.

You read that right.

The students worked with Fort Wayne-based nonprofit vocal music company Heartland Sings throughout the school year to learn about opera. The lessons were part of the students' Language Arts curriculum.

The students created all aspects of the story and music for the operas, the school said. They include skills like teamwork, collaboration, problem solving, creative thinking, critical thinking and perserverance.

The students will perform the operas - "The Case of the Many Missing Bvideooks" and "Something is Rotten in Candyland" -  for friends and family on Tuesday, May 22.

"Working with Heartland Sings has been an amazing opportunity for our students," Adams Principal Federa Smith said. "Like most first-graders, they were not familiar with opera before this experience. That we were able to combine these lessons with our language arts curriculum made it a unique learning experience that they will never forget."
