Flood insurance premium meeting set for West Lakes residents

NOBLE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - The Maumee River Basin Commission will host a free seminar for residents in and around the flood-ravaged West Lakes chain on flood insurance premiums.

The meeting will be held Wednesday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Orange Township Fire Station in Rome City. Commission professionals will offer guidance on mitigation reporting and flood insurance premium information, according to the flyer.

Mick Newton, the director of the Noble County Emergency Management Agency, said with the proper installation of approved flood vents in foundations, homeowners can prevent many issues and save money on their flood insurance premiums.

The West Lake chain of Waldron, Steinbarger, Tamarack and Jones Lakes in Noble County has seen months of high water in 2017 and already in 2018. Numerous homes took on water and several roadways were closed as water consumed the area, which is fed by the Elkhart River.

The flyer urges residents to bring their Elevation Certificate and their current flood insurance policy to the meeting. Residents can call (866) 588-7065 if they don't have an Elevation Certificate.

Seating for the meeting is limited. Residents should reserve a spot by calling (866) 599-7065 or by registering online at maumeeriveroutreach.eventbrite.com.
