Flavor for the Kids is Positively Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - If you have an appetite for burgers and fries and like supporting a good cause, you might want to mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 16th. That's the day Bravas restaurant in Fort Wayne will participate in a fundraiser called Flavor for the Kids. It will donate up to 10% of its sales to help fund an outdoor learning center at Whitney Young Early Learning Center.

Four-year old Adria Dance is one of many preschoolers at Whitney Young who will get to enjoy the new learning area. Her mother Stephanie Daugherty says the area will complement what the preschool already offers. "It's a school that's family based," said Daughterty. " It has a family environment. They're hands on. They get to learn what they are actually interested in."

Bravas decided to help fund the outdoor learning center because its owner Bo Gonzalez has a special Whitney Young connection. Bravas manager Katie Dilling told us about it. "Bo is an Fort Wayne Community Schools kid," said Dilling. "He did attend Whitney Young Early Childhood as well as Weisser Park and South Side and it's close to our neighborhood."

Whitney Young is located at 1026 E Pontiac St. in Fort Wayne. It is a bright spot in a neighborhood where economic development is stagnant. The school serves 240 students. They're the reason Bravas decided to participate in the Flavor for the Kids fundraiser this month. "On May 16th there will be an all day event," said Dilling. "We will have the restaurant open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. We're going to have a silent auction that's going on that whole day at Bravas, the brick and mortar. Our food truck will also be out for lunch downtown from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and so a portion of those sales will also go to this fundraiser.  "We're also at Weisser Park Elementary School from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday night for their spring arts program and a portion of those sales will also be donated."

Whitney Young principal Melissa Plumb said the school will start offering all day Pre-K to 4 year olds by August 1st and that is one of the reasons the extra space will come in handy. "We're going to have a fence to go around all the way down to Smith Street from McKee and it will enclose 10,000 square feet of learning area," said Plumb. "We already have a garden started and they'll be more gardens added inside the area. We'll also have an area for drama, an area where kids will be able to build things. We will use it all year long."

Plumb hopes to have $15,000 raised for the outdoor learning center by this fall.   She said since a project like this falls outside the FWCS budget, it's solely funded by fundraisers and private donators like Bravas. "It just makes you feel good to see a community come together to do something nice for people that they might not even know," said Dilling. "We're super excited!"

"To be able to have a program where students can go outside in the natural environment learning at their own pace, it think that's great," said Daugherty.

Bravas is located at 3412 Fairfield Avenue in Fort Wayne, IN 46807. The phone number is (260) 745-7002. The fundraiser is Wednesday, May 16th.
