FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A driver died Wednesday morning after suffering a medical event that led to a crash into a power pole.
Around 6:30 a.m., police were called to the 3000 block of Butler Road near Midnight Pass after an SUV crashed into a power pole. The pole was snapped in half.
First responders had to use caution when approaching the vehicle because of downed lines.
The crash affected power in the area. Multiple stoplights along Hillegas Road lost power because of the crash. AEP reported around 400 customers without power in the area.
The driver was initially listed in critical condition but later died. Police said he had a medical episode prior to the crash.
The Allen County Coroner's Office said Thursday the driver - 69-year-old Paul R. Williams of Fort Wayne - died of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease.
