Halloween should be fun, but not expensive. Patching together a costume out of old clothes, cardboard and other scavenged items is a perfect way to make your own special version of classic characters.
If you are fresh out of ideas, then a trip to the thrift store is a great way to help brainstorm ideas. This is exactly what my daughter and I did this year to help generate some plans for our costumes.
Check out what we came up with.
“Weird Al” Yankovic:
For under $10, we scored three pieces for this costume that were integral for replicating the comedic icon. Glasses, suspenders and flamboyant Hawaiian shirt were acquired, paired with red Chuck Taylor’s (which we already had) and this costume was almost complete.
There is no question you have to have the “Weird Al” hair. You can find wigs online under $15, which I recommend over an actual perm just for Halloween.
Make sure to brush up on your Yankovic repertoire so you can stay in character!
Joan from “Mad Men”
File this outfit under V for Va-va-va-voom! Put some sass into this spooky season with this classic feminine character. It’s easy enough to assemble: red lipstick, black heels and a string of pearls.
What’s missing is the classic office attire to fit the early '60s. Try something like this grey and cream dress, found at the neighborhood thrift for approximately $7. Match with fishnets, pin up your hair and you’ll be ready to celebrate a swingin’ Halloween.
Marty McFly from “Back To the Future”
This costume is 1.21 gigawatts of awesome. Roll up your favorite jeans, grab some white sneakers and head to the second-hand store.
We quickly spotted this red “life jacket” and blue jean jacket, both for under $15. Calvin Klein never looked so good.
Pro-Tip: Shop with an open mind
If you just can’t think of anything, pick your favorite thrift store and wander around for a while. Ideas may just pop right out at you! An old wedding dress could make a great zombie bride, some overalls could turn you into a creepy scarecrow or you just might find something to turn you into the ghost with the most.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
