(CNN) - Comedian Chris Rock has Twitter buzzing after a Fourth of July tweet.

On Wednesday, Rock posted this controversial message to his account: "Happy white people's Independence Day. The slaves weren't free, but I'm sure they enjoyed fireworks."

Many of his 870,000 followers responded, as did others across the Web.

Some people supported Rock's comment, while others claimed the remark was inappropriate, or even racist.

Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain told CNN the comedian was "holding onto the past."

Ground rules for posting comments: No profanity or personal attacks. No racially charged comments.  If  it's not something you would say to someone's face, it's most likely inappropriate. Please comment on the subject of the story itself. If you do not follow these rules, we will remove your post. Repeat offenders will be banned from making future comments.  Keep it civil, folks!
