After-Christmas sales: Stores to shop

Shoppers can expect up to 50% off discounts

You may be just catching your breath after finally wrapping up your Christmas shopping. But for deal hunters, more bargains can be had the day after Christmas.

Traditionally retailers continue to slash prices through the end of the year when they're trying to move their merchandise. While this year won't be an exception, analysts told Forbes.com that the discounts might not be as much as 70 percent off as it was last year when there was more inventory. But shoppers can still expect discounts up to 50 percent.

"Christmas is liquidation time, and when you have less inventory you have to liquidate less," Howard Davidowitz, president of Davidowitz & Associates, a retail consultant and investment bank, told Forbes. "So if living with half-off sounds good enough this year, make tracks to the mall."

Davidowitz said that the best deals will be at department stores like JCPenney and Macy's because they primarily sell apparel. On Monday JCPenney announced that various doorbuster deals would be offered on Dec. 26 from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. High-end department stores like Saks and Neiman Marcus haven't yet made formal announcements, but will also likely offer 25 to 50 percent off their merchandise, according to Davidowitz.

If clothing isn't your thing, you can also snag deals on computers, Forbes reports that if you sign up for Dell's e-mail notifications, you'll receive a coupon for 25 percent off selected electronics and software. Another promotion offers $90 off a 24-inch monitor, keypad and mouse bundle. Lenovo is also offering some specials -- ThinkPads are 10 percent off through Jan. 4 and free Windows 7 upgrades will be given to those who purchase a laptop of desktop.
