FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Northeast Indiana is fortunate to be home to one of the best zoos in the entire country. The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, and this year the new African Journey exhibit opens on June 6.

Wild on WANE will showcase the zoo over the next several months.  You can catch new segments every Thursday on First at 5 starting on June 4.  The segment will repeat Friday mornings on First News.  Or you can check back here for any segments you might have missed.

The zoo was initially a nature preserve located at Franke Park in the early 1950's. In 1965, after an outpouring of community support, the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo opened to the public.

Over the years, significant improvements have been made to the zoo.  The African Journey exhibit was the biggest project in the zoo's history.  It involved a complete makeover of what used to be known as the African Veldt.  For more history of the zoo, click here.

Over the next several months, NewsChannel 15 will be adding bonus videos and other content to the Wild on WANE page.  Just click on the stories located to the left.  Those stories and videos should give even more people a reason to visit this wonderful, internationally recognized zoo.

The Zoo is open 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., 7 days-a-week from April 18 to October 11, 2009.
