FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Northeast Indiana is fortunate to be home to one of the best zoos in the entire country. The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, and this year the visitors will be able to see all sorts of new animals.

Wild on WANE will showcase the zoo over the next several months.  You can catch new segments every Thursday on First News in the morning and in the afternoon on First at 5 starting on April 22.

If you'd like to win a family four pack of zoo tickets you can enter our contest by clicking here.  Answer the weekly question correctly and we'll enter you in a drawing.  The first winner will be announced Thursday, April 29 during First News after the Wild on WANE segment.

The zoo was initially a nature preserve located at Franke Park in the early 1950's. In 1965, after an outpouring of community support, the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo opened to the public.

Over the years, significant improvements have been made to the zoo.  The African Journey exhibit was the biggest project in the zoo's history.  It involved a complete makeover of what used to be known as the African Veldt.  For more history of the zoo, click here.

Over the next several months, NewsChannel 15 will be adding bonus videos and other content to the Wild on WANE page.  Just click on the stories located to the left.  Those stories and videos should give even more people a reason to visit this wonderful, internationally recognized zoo.

The Zoo is open 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., 7 days-a-week from April 24 to October 10, 2010.
