FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Cold temperatures in recent days have caused frozen pipe around the area.  There are a few things that you can do to prevent frozen pipes before the cold hits.  But, if you’re too late, there are safe ways to thaw those pipes out.

Ahead of time, there are some steps you can take to keep the cold off your pipes.  First, seal up any cracks, especially around windows and doors.  Don’t forget the basement in this step.  Then, if you have any pipes along an outside wall, you will want to make sure those are insulated.  You can also leave your faucets on and cabinet doors open to allow some heat in.

If you do find that your pipes have frozen, you must very carefully thaw them.  Be sure to work slowly and start where the pipes are the warmest then work your way to where they are frozen.  Using a hair dryer or a small electric heater will work.  Do not leave any heater unattended.  This is how fires start.

The best option is to call a professional.  This will ensure that your pipes will thaw safely without any pipes bursting or fires starting.
