Hurricane Irene update

Looking at the expected storm path and strength

MIAMI, Fla. (WANE) - Hurricane Irene is the first official hurricane of the Atlantic season this year.  Monday morning it was still centered over Puerto Rico and moving very slowly to the northeast.  As of Monday morning, this is the information on the storm from the National Hurricane Center .

  • Category 1 Hurricane
  • Pressure: 989 mb
  • Moving NW at 12 mph
  • Maximum winds: 80 mph

As this storm moves closer to Florida, the strength of it will be determined by how it tracks over the Dominican Republic.  The mountains in that area could play a huge role in the strength of the storm.

The mountains in that area are tall enough that they could help weaken the storm, lessening the impacts to the U.S.  If the storm tracks farther away from the Dominican, the storm could keep more of it's strength and in turn be a bit stronger when it hit land here at home.

There have already been reports of damage from this storm in Puerto Rico.
