FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -  Here in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio, we know the three months of meteorological winter (December, January, February) can be quite brutal with Mother Nature bringing us snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain, and bitter cold.

Our average yearly snowfall is 33.5" and it comes along with winter high temperatures averaging in the upper 20s and lower 30s.

The Live Doppler 15 Fury Weather Team has produced a new "15 Fury Alert" special for the winter season that's now underway.

You can watch each of the 4 segments of the program in the video window posted alongside this story.

Segment 1 includes an overview of a typical winter season in our area, along with an explanation of the winter weather alert types you're likely to hear us talk about during the upcoming months.  We highlight tools you can use on wane.com to track the weather yourself and discuss when your NOAA Weather Radio will sound during winter.  Plus, learn the history of the Pokagon State Park toboggan run and see how it operates behind-the-scenes.

Segment 2 fills you in on preparing for winter storms and the potential for power outages that such storms bring.  Learn about your options for alternative power sources and the safety concerns that come along with them.  We also explain how the power company responds during a winter storm and why some areas get their power restored more quickly than others.  Also, when cold air sets in and you have to be outside for an extended amount of time, frostbite is a serious danger.  Learn what frostbite really is and simple ways to prevent damage to your skin if you begin to experience frostbite symptoms.

Segment 3 features a segment on snow shoveling safety and strategy.  You'll learn which areas of the body are put under the most stress when shoveling, plus you'll pick up some tips and tricks you can put into use at your home to make shoveling your driveway easier.  Also, do you forget which way you need to turn your steering wheel to regain control of your car when it skids?  Get a reminder by checking out this segment.

In Segment 4, the Live Doppler 15 Fury Weather Team provides its insight into how it develops long-term forecasts for the winter season.  The el niño and la niña phenomena are explained along with other weather patterns that impact our winter forecast right here in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.  Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Conder provides the official Live Doppler 15 Fury Winter Forecast, including predictions on snowfall and temperature trends during the season.  This segment wraps up with a reminder of items to include in a "Winter Emergency Kit" to have on hand at home and in your car.
