FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Toyota is stopping sales and production of eight models, involving up to six production  years depending on the model, because of a safety issue. This recall affects 2.3 million vehicles.

Faulty gas pedals could stick, causing the car to accelerate unexpectedly. The pedals are blamed for several crashes, some fatal.

"Our investigation indicates that certain acceleration pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position," a Toyota customer service recording said.

Several calls to Toyota spokespersons were not returned Wednesday.

Sales are stopped on the following vehicles:

2009-2010 RAV 4
2009-2010 Corolla
2007-2010 Camry
2009-2010 Matrix
2005-2010 Avalon
2010 Highlander
2007-2010 Tundra
2008-2010 Sequoia

Fort Wayne Toyota said there are still a lot of cars it can sell and the dealer will move those to the front of the lot. The dealer is staying positive and is confident Toyota will make parts to fix the gas pedals soon.

In the meantime, Donna Toms, a driving instructor with Safeway Driving, said if a gas pedal becomes stuck, never step on it to try to loosen it. Instead, tap the side of the pedal.

"First thing to do is alert the other drivers you are having a problem. Put on your hazards and honk the horn. Immediately look for an escape path, ideally on the side of the road," Toms said.

She said to put the car in neutral and apply steady, firm pressure to the brakes. Don't pump the brakes because that could interfere with the Anti-Lock Brake Systems. It's also important, Toms said, to not panic.

Toyota added to call the dealer after having any problems with the accelerator.
