FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The Allen County Highway Department announced on Wednesday that the opening of the Spring Street Bridge near the University of Saint Francis campus has been pushed back to October 5.

The project contractor, Primco, Inc., requested the one week extension in order to make necessary changes to a sidewalk connection from the northwest corner of the bridge to Sprunger Street. The new sidewalk will meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The changes will add around $36,000 to the cost of the project. However, the total amount spent is still expected to be just under the $2.27 million bid submitted by Primco, Inc. 80 percent of the funding for this project is coming from the federal government.

The official detour routes are:

  • Spring Street:  Bass Rd. (Spring St.) to Hillegas Rd. to State Blvd. to Tyler Ave. to Spring St.
  • Leesburg Road:  Leesburg Rd. to Main St. to Runion Ave. to Spring St.
