NOBLE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – Icy road conditions caused multiple crashes in northeast Indiana.
According to the Noble County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. 6 at the Noble/DeKalb County line, east of Kendallville was closed for about for about an hour while police worked several crashes including one with a vehicle on its top, a four car crash, and another two-car crash.
Around 9:15 a.m., a witness told NewsChannel 15 a crash that involved at least nine vehicles and a semi was still on the scene and traffic in the area was still delayed.
Indiana State Police said as the rain continued to fall, it quickly turned into ice on the roadways. Primary and secondary roadways were mostly covered with a layer of ice which made for hazardous and slow going driving conditions.
Troopers were at the scene of two crashes that closed at US 6 at the Noble/DeKalb County Line and S.R. 327 between S.R. 8 and CR 40 (North of Garrett).
Officers were also called to an eight-vehicle crash in Fort Wayne which closed Bass Road .
ISP said drivers are reminded and encouraged to modify their driving behavior in these conditions. While the roadway may look wet, the probability exists that it is black ice and with higher than recommended speeds, could contribute to a vehicle losing control. Slower speeds, increased following distances, and overall attention to surroundings will go a long way in helping to ensure a safe travel.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has made it easy to check road conditions around the state.
