FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne firefighters were called to a train fire on South Anthony Boulevard near Wayne Trace early Wednesday morning.
Crews received a call around 2 a.m. of a fire on the lead engine stopped at the railroad crossing. A Norfolk Southern train engine had caught fire.
According to police, personnel on the train were able to extinguish the fire before it spread.
FWFD was advised the train was carrying hazmat materials, but there was no danger of the fire reaching those materials. The first car carrying the materials was six cars from the lead engine. It was not known what the train was carrying.
South Anthony across the tracks was closed for about an hour until a second engine could help move the train out of the area.
NewsChannel 15 has made contact with Norfolk Southern officials and are awaiting a response for more information.
