NOBLE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - A crash involving a semi closed part of State Road 8 in Noble County Saturday afternoon and sent one man to a hospital.

Indiana State police said around 11:40 a.m., a van owned by Ken's Beverage from Indianapolis was going south on State Road 8 between County Roads 600 E and 700 E.

A semi-tractor trailer owned by D & K Services from Warren, Michigan was in front of the van going the same direction. Police said the semi driver, Walter Schmid, 50, of Warren, Michigan slowed down for an animal in the road.

The driver of the van, David Hughes, 45, of North Webster, Indiana, rear-ended the semi. Police said he didn't brake as he tried to steer left at the last moment, but couldn't avoid the crash.

Hughes was trapped in the van and had to be extricated by firefighters. He was wearing a seatbelt and went to a Fort Wayne hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Schmid wasn't hurt.

Part of State Road 8 was closed until around 12:45 p.m.
