STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - A semi-trailer filled with oranges flipped on its side Wednesday night along U.S. 20 near Otter Lake, according to a Steuben County Sheriff's Department report.
Just before 10 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the rollover accident on U.S. 20 near County Road 900 West. Officials found a semi flipped on the driver's side in the ditch along the road, according to the report.
Investigators believe Maynard Johnson, 88, St. Charles, Minnesota, was traveling west on U.S. 20 when he approached the curves near C.R. 900 West driving to fast. The report said the semi-trailer went up on two wheels for a short distance before the semi rolled onto the driver's side and slid approximately 280 feet in the opposite lane of travel before coming to a rest in a ditch.
Johnson was trapped inside the cab of the vehicle and had to be extricated by Orland and Salem firefighters. Johnson was transported to a Fort Wayne hospital by air ambulance for an internal head injury. The report did not indicate his condition.
Investigators believe Johnson was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to the report.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has made it easy to check road conditions around the state.
