Police: Man hit after directing traffic on I-69 following separate crash

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne police said a man was hit by a minivan while he was directing traffic after another crash on I-69 Sunday night.

Fort Wayne police said it happened around 7:48 p.m. on northbound I-69 near the 304 mile marker (just south of Illinois Road.)

According to police, a Nissan SUV from Michigan lost control and hit the cement median wall. The Nissan came to a stop in the road and was blocking two lanes of traffic. No one in the Nissan was hurt.

Then an Indiana couple driving a Chevrolet Equinox stopped to help the people in the Nissan. Police said the adult man who was in the Equinox started to direct traffic. While he was trying to direct traffic around the crash, police said he was hit by a Chrysler Town and Country minivan. Police said it appears the minivan driver did not see the man directing traffic.

That man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. At the time of both crashes the roads were slick from sleet. Investigators determined alcohol was not a factor in the crashes.

Northbound I-69 had lane restrictions for about three hours while crews investigated the crash.

An incorrect headline previously stated the man was killed. He was last listed in critical condition.
