FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The man who was driving the car that crossed the center line and hit a pickup truck on U.S. 33 Saturday afternoon died from his injuries.
The Allen County coroner's office said Randall Fulk, 29, of Fort Wayne was pronounced dead at Parkview Regional Medical Center. He was flown from the scene to the hospital by Parkview's Samaritan. Fulk's cause of death was ruled blunt force trauma.
The initial investigation found Fulk was wearing his seatbelt. He was also trapped in his car at the scene and had to be extricated by emergency responders.
Police said the Mercedes Fulk was driving crossed the center line traveling south and hit a pickup truck at approximately 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon north of Hilderbrand Road in northern Allen County just south of Carroll Road.
According to the Allen County Sheriff's Department the head-on collision caused the pickup to slide into a ditch, while the Mercedes came to rest in the middle of the roadway. The driver of the truck was hospitalized in serious condition. A passenger in the truck was transported in good condition.
U.S. 33, just south of Carroll Road was closed in both directions between Hilderbrand and Giesking for more than three hours.
It's still not clear what caused Fulk to cross the center line. The names of the people in the pickup truck haven't been released.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has made it easy to check road conditions around the state.
