DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) An Edon, Ohio woman was killed Wednesday morning when the car she was driving crossed over into oncoming traffic on State Road 427 north of Waterloo.
According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, Saralee A. Handy, 48, was traveling northeast on State Road 427 east of County Road 39 at around 7:45 am.
A witness in a vehicle traveling behind Handy told police that Handy veered sharply to the left into the opposite lane of traffic. The driver of a pickup truck tried to avoid the collision by driving into a ditch, but he was unsuccessful. The pickup came to rest on the right side of the roadway and Handy's Ford Focus spun counterclockwise, coming to rest in the southwest bound lane. A third vehicle then struck Handy's Focus in the rear.
Handy was killed in the accident, while the driver of the pickup, Thomas E. Suntken, 60, of Hamilton, Indiana suffered a compound fracture to his right ankle. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured.
A news release issued by the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department did not indicate why Handy veered across the center line or if they believe drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has made it easy to check road conditions around the state.
