FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne police are investigating a crash involving a 17-year-old Homestead High School student late Thursday night.
Shortly before 10 p.m., officers and Fort Wayne firefighters responded to a crash in the 7100 block of West Jefferson Boulevard.
Firefighters needed special equipment to extricate the teenage-driver from the vehicle.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was initially transported in critical condition. He was later updated to serious condition at the hospital.
Police said the driver was heading east on West Jefferson Blvd. when he attempted to pass another eastbound vehicle and lost control. The driver then struck a guardrail making impact on the driver's side.
The FWFD used special equipment to extricate the driver from the vehicle.
Officers noted in a police report that rain and wet pavement are believed to be factors in the crash.
Investigators said teenagers following in a car behind witnessed the crash.
No other vehicles were involved.
West Jefferson Blvd. was closed for about two hours while crews cleaned up and investigated the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has made it easy to check road conditions around the state.
