I-69 reopened after fatal accident

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - Both lanes of I-69 are back open after a fatal accident near mile maker 86 Thursday afternoon.

According to state police, around 2:10 pm, 45-year old Manuel Leon-Paramo of Shelby Township, Michigan was traveling northbound on I-69.

For some unknown reason, the SUV it went through the median and hit a large utility vehicle in the southbound lanes head-on.

Leon-Parmo was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.  He is currently at Lutheran Hospital in critical condition.

A passenger in the vehicle, 31-year old Audon Leon-Paramo was wearing a seatbelt however he was declared dead at the scene by medics.

The driver of the utility vehicle was not seriously injured.

Part of the interstate was shut down for about three hours while crews conducted their investigation.

State police believe speed many have been a factor in the accident.
