ADAMS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - The driver of the van involved in a buggy accident in Adams County told authorities he was texting before the crash.
Just before 8:00 a.m. Tuesday the sheriff's department got a 911 call about a crash, near the intersection of S.R. 124 and C.R. 400 W. That's about three miles west of Monroe.
A van traveling east on S.R. 124 collided with an eastbound Amish buggy.
According to the accident report, the driver of the van, 21-year-old Chandler Gerber said he was texting and there was also a glare from the sun making it hard to see right before the crash.
The driver of the van didn't have any injuries.
The Adams County Sheriff's office confirmed to Newschannel 15 that two people are dead as a result of the accident and two people remain in critical condition.
Inside the buggy was a 16-year-old boy who was driving the buggy, he was treated and released from the hospital. An infant girl was also treated and released.
A 17-year-old boy along with the mother, 44-year-old Mary Schwartz remain in critical condition.
A 3-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl were killed in the crash.
The horse also had to be put down.
The Adams County Sheriff's office said the driver of the van doesn't face charges yet, but that will be up to the prosecutor.
