NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WANE) - Christopher Noll Carmin, 29, of Hoagland, died on Sunday after being involved in a crash on I-469 Sunday afternoon.
Carmin was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition, but was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital. According to the New Haven Police Department, Carmin was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his car.
A woman and two children were also airlifted to a hospital. The woman and one child were both in serious condition on Sunday evening. The other child was in critical condition.
Officer Scott Adam with the New Haven Police Department said the crash happened around 3:45 p.m. around mile maker 20 on northbound I-469. That's between the exits for State Road 930/Lincoln Highway and U.S. 24.
Adam said the driver of the SUV lost control and went from the left lane across the right lane and continued off the interstate. The SUV flipped several times down a hill and landed upside down at the bottom of the ditch.
Police initially said one person was thrown out of the SUV while it was rolling but, in an updated media release, police said a man and a woman were outside the vehicle when emergency responders arrived. Both children were trapped in the SUV. An Allen County police officer and an Indiana State Police trooper pulled one child out and performed medical attention until New Haven paramedics and firefighters arrived. It then took firefighters about 27 minutes to extricate the other child.
Samaritan helicopters were used to fly the victims to a hospital.
The relationship of those in the car has not been released. It is also unknown why the driver lost control. Adam said no other cars were involved, but people in nearby vehicles were able to give police witness accounts.
I-469 northbound was closed at Exit 19, which is for State Road 930/Lincoln Highway, for more than three hours.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has made it easy to check road conditions around the state.
