SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT) —  A woman is dead after a car crashed into her home early Friday morning on South Bend's east side, just south of the Notre Dame campus.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the home on the corner of Twyckenham Drive and Corby Boulevard just before 1:30 a.m. after a car crashed into the house.

When emergency responders arrived, they found a car lodged in the house and a nearby fire hydrant sheared off its base. The hydrant also crashed into the house, which caused another large hole.

Witnesses said two cars, possibly speeding, were in the area of the house before the collision happened.

South Bend police are asking witnesses to contact them at 574-235-9201.

Police said two people were inside the car that crashed into the home. They were taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Family members said the woman had two dogs. One dog did survive the crash.

As of 7:40 a.m. Corby Boulevard was still closed,  but Twyckenham Drive had re-opened.

It is unclear if drugs or alcohol were related in the crash.
