KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A four-year-old and her father were taken to a hospital in serious condition on Friday after their buggy collided with a car near Nappanee in Kosciusko County.
The Koscuisko County Sheriff's Department and emergency responders were called to the scene of 5414 West County Road 1350 North at about 6:19 p.m. on Friday.
According to the information officials gathered at the scene, the driver of the buggy was pulling out of his private driveway and tried to stop his horse from going out into the roadway when it suddenly trotted into the path of an oncoming car.
Jodi R. Kauffman, 23, said she saw the horse entering the road from behind some trees and immediately braked but slid into the side of the buggy's carriage.
The driver of the buggy, Arlen Lehman, 51, and his four-year-old daughter were airlifted to a hospital in South Bend in serious condition.
Lehman's wife and two other children in the buggy, ages 10 and 11, were not injured. The driver of the car was also uninjured.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The crash is still under investigation by the Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. team. The Indiana State Police are also assisting in the crash investigation.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has made it easy to check road conditions around the state.
