DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - Three people were injured after a two vehicle crash on I-69 Monday afternoon.
According to a police report, at 2:42 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a two vehicle crash at the 323 mile marker in DeKalb County, about three miles south of the County Road 11-A exit.
The report said a minivan driven by Vernon Rockwell, 63, Portland, and an SUV driven by Maurice Byall, 59, Fort Wayne, collided.
Police said according to Byall, he was driving north in the passing lane when Rockwell suddenly slammed on his brakes and veered into the passing lane, striking Byall's vehicle. Byall told police he thought Rockwell might have been attempting to turn around at the emergency vehicle crossover.
Rockwell and his passenger, Wendell Rockwell, 60, Portland, were taken by ambulance to Parkview Regional Medical Center. Vernon Rockwell sustained a broken clavicle and fractured ribs. Wendell Rockwell was complaining of chest pain.
Their conditions were not released.
Byall did not require medical treatment despite complaining of chest pain and minor swelling in his hand.
Both vehicles were a total loss.
The Indiana State Police, DeKalb EMS and Auburn Fire Department assisted the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department with the investigation.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has made it easy to check road conditions around the state.
