FORT WAYNE, IN. - In our continuing summer series the Sunday Sit-Down, TinCaps manager Jose Valentin takes a seat.
A 16-year veteran of the major leagues, Valentin grew up in Manati, Puerto Rico in a baseball obsessed home. His father played semi-professionally for some 20 years, traveling around the world on the diamond. The love of the game was passed onto him and he began playing at an early age on the fields not far from his home.
At the age of 18, Valentin signed his first professional contract, ironically enough, with the San Diego Padres, the same organization that began his foray into managing.
In his discussion with WANE-TV Sports, Valentin discusses his early introduction to the game, the start of his career, desire to be a role model off the field and more recently, the start of his son's professional career.
