FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The Crossroads League men's basketball tournament tipped off on Wednesday night with three of the four first round games won by the underdog. That includes a shocker at Indiana Wesleyan where the eighth-seeded Huntington topped top-seed IWU 81-69.
Huntington was led by Carroll high school grad Shane Merryman's 28 points. TJ Short added 16 while Colin Featherson had 12.
Huntington advances to face Taylor in the second round on Saturday. Taylor upset Spring Arbor 70-62.
In the other half of the bracket Saint Francis - the no. 6 seed - lost at Bethel 89-73. East Noble grad Kevin Bloom tallied 21 points to lead the Cougars. Leo grad Jordan Bowerman tallied 20 points for Bethel.
Bethel advances to face Marian on Saturday. Marian - the no. 7 seed - upset no. 2 see Grace 62-54.
In other tournament action, the Indiana Tech women lost in the first round of the WHAC tournament to Siena Heights by a score of 78-59. Homestead grad Rachael Kruse led Tech with 24 points as the Warriors finish 13-18 on the season.
In the MIAA women's tournament Trine fell to Calvin College 83-48.
