FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Former I.U. basketball standout and ex-Fort Wayne Mad Ant Rod Wilmont is back in the Summit City as Wilmont has joined the boys basketball coaching staff at Canterbury high school.
Head coach Scott Kreiger confirmed the hire on Thursday night. Kreiger is in his first year coaching the Canterbury boys after 14 seasons leading the Canterbury girls program. The Canterbury girls have won four of the last five 1A state titles.
"We had a position open that we were looking to fill," said Kreiger. "Roderick is friends with one of the assistant coaches on our staff and it just so happened he had moved back to town and was looking for an opportunity."
Wilmont had recently been playing basketball in Sweden, but returned to the Summit City for the birth of his son.
"We just made the hire official last night, and tonight was his first practice with the team," added Kreiger. "He connected immediately with the players on our team, and he connected differently with each one. In Austin Hatch's case, they went back and forth about the Big Ten, with Austin talking Michigan and Roderick praising Indiana."
Kreiger expects Wilmont to be on staff with Canterbury for at least this season.
Wilmont most recently played for the Mad Ants during the 2010-11 season . He started all 47 games he played and averaged 14.3 points a night. He also played in Fort Wayne for the 2007-08 and 09-10 seasons.
