FORT WAYNE, IN. - Four years ago the Stavreti Scholarship was formed to honor longtime Northrop baseball coach Chris Stavreti. On Saturday afternoon at Autumn Ridge Golf Course, the organization reached a milestone. With the help of the Stavreti Scramble - a charity golf event to raise funds for the group - the scholarship endowment eclipsed $40,000. Originally, group members didn't expect to see those kinds of totals until 2013.
The Stavreti Scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating member of the Northrop baseball team. While on the field performance is considered, character and academics are vital components in making the selection.
Stavreti himself was the Bruins baseball coach for 26 years and has touched countless lives. He has been in a long battle with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gherig's Disease.
