FORT WAYNE, IN. (WANE) - The D-League regular season is just over one month away and the Mad Ants took the first steps towards filling out their roster over the weekend - holding a two-day open tryout in Fort Wayne. More than 70 players attended the event, vying for one of the up to five training camp roster spots the Ants can fill from this tryout.
The Ants have had success from these settings in the past - veteran Ron Howard was an open tryout player before beginning a long career in Fort Wayne. Among the notable names in attendance this weekend - Jamar Butler - a member of the 2007 Ohio State team that was a national runner-up and reached the Final Four.
First-year head coach Duane Ticknor says he was very happy with the talent level of the players trying out for the team, but said there is no real plan for filling out the training camp roster from this event, rather keeping an eye out for potential roster members.
The Mad Ants also own the No. 1 pick in the upcoming D-League Draft which will take place on November 2nd.
