Toledo Hands K's 5th Straight Loss

TOLEDO, OH. - The Toledo Walleye exploded for four third period goals, as they went on to defeat the Fort Wayne Komets 6-3 at the Huntington Center on Sunday. Toledo now has a record of 29-18-2-4 overall and is 14-7-1-3 on home ice.

Toledo started off strong for the second night in a row, scoring the first goal at the 3:17 mark of the first period. Cody Lampl jumped on his own rebound and fired a shot behind Fort Wayne goalie Charlie Effinger. Nino Musitelli had the lone assist on Lampl’s fifth goal of the year.

Fort Wayne answered back 8 minutes into the period off a goal from Matt Syroczynski. The Komets struck again 20 seconds later with Brent Smith extending the lead to 2-1.

Stephon Thorne tied the game up at 2-2 after he took a pass from Musitelli and buried the puck into the Fort Wayne goal at the 9:31 mark of the opening period.

No goals were scored in the second period, keeping the game at a 2-2 tie. Toledo sent 18 shots at Effinger through two periods of play.

The Walleye lit the lamp at 3:09 of the third period to take a 3-2 lead. Musitelli sent a shot at Effinger after the Komets failed to clear the puck out of their zone. Pat Knowlton and Thorne had the assists on Musitelli’s third of the year.

Randy Rowe picked up a loose puck off of Willie Coetzee and deked Effinger to slam a puck into the back of the net at 9:55 of the final period. Erik Spady had the second assist on the play that put Toledo up 4-2.

Byron Froese pushed the lead to 5-2 at the 11:33 mark of the third period as he took a pass from Joey Martin and sailed a shot over the blocker of Effinger. Spady collected his second assist of the game on the goal.

Fort Wayne pulled within two goals with Brandon Marino scoring at 16:56 of the third period.

Kyle Rogers added some insurance as he collected an empty net goal with 1:10 to play in regulation. Wes O’Neill and Coetzee picked up the assists on the final goal of the night, giving Toledo a 6-3 victory over the Fort Wayne Komets.
