The Fort Wayne Komets spoiled Evansville’s bid at an opening night victory Saturday at the Ford Center.
While the IceMen outperformed the Komets in shots-on-goal, 44-25, possession of the puck was dominated by the Komets in the first two periods of the game, resulting in four goals that Evansville could not recover from.
Fort Wayne forwards Eric Giosa and Brandon Marino tallied two goals apiece. Giosa’s second period short-handed goal on the breakaway against IceMen rookie net-minder Paul Karpowich proved to be the game winner.
Karpowich was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on sixteen shots. He was relieved by backup goalie Rob Madore, who allowed one goal on eight shots.
Goal scorers for the IceMen were newcomers Tyler Shattack, who scored 2:47 into the second period and Brett Sonne, scoring at the 6:27 mark of the third period.
The IceMen power play continued to struggle as the special teams went 0-6 in the man advantage. Komets’ power play went 1-3 and added another goal short-handed.
