Komets Give Up 9 Goals In Toledo Loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Komets fans won't have a fond final memory of 2012 as Fort Wayne fell to Toledo 9-4 on New Year's Eve.

Toeldo's Kyle Rogers opened the scoring just 3:11 into the first period when he beat Kenny Reiter to give the Walleye a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later Fort Wayne's JM Rizk would score on a breakaway to knot the game. It was Rizk's 12th goal of the season.

At 6:55 in the first frame Andrej Nestrasil would find the net, making it 2-1 Toledo. However, defenseman Scott Kishel would score at 10:39 to send the game into the second period tied at two.

Toledo would rip off three straight goals in the second period - including a powerplay goal by Nestrasil - to take a 5-2 advantage. Fort Wayne's Matt Firman would score his sixth goal of the year at 17:43 in the second period to cut the Toledo lead to 5-3.

Toledo's Travis Novak scored at 8:52 on a powerplay in the third period to up the lead to 6-3. Fort Wayne's Eric Giosa would counter at 9:53 to make it 6-4. However, the Komets would give up three straight goals to end the game, setting the final at 9-4

Reiter saved 20-of-24 shots in goal for the Komets, playing just the first 29:43. Charlie Effinger came in to stop 14-of-19 shots in 30:17.

The Komets will be back in action on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Gwinnett.
