FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - After beating first-place Muskegon Friday night, the Komets had a chance to leapfrog Port Huron for second place Saturday night.
The K's would claim the second spot in the IHL standings after a 5-1 win over the IceHawks.
It was a quick start for the Komets. Just 22 seconds in, Konstantin Shafranov lit the lamp off a nice pass from Matt Syroczynski. Then about six minutes later, the puck was kicked to P.C. Drouin who hit a wide open net as the K's led 2-0 after the first period.
After a scoreless second period, the IceHawks would cut the lead to one in the third period when Derek Patrosso scored at the 12:28 mark. That's when the Komets just poured it on.
Less than a minute later, Drouin would net his second goal of the game to make it 3-1. Then Colin Chaulk scored about a minute-and-a-half after for a 4-1 score. Finally, Sean O'Connor added a powerplay goal at the 18:46 mark for the 5-1 final.
With the victory, the Komets move into second place in the IHL.
The K's next travel to Port Huron on Wednesday.
