KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Utilizing a three-goal third period, the Fort Wayne Komets (14-11-1-1) came into Wings Stadium and skated away with a 5-3 victory Friday night over the Kalamazoo Wings (11-13-2-1).
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes of play, the K-Wings were outshot 11-4 in the period, earning three of their shots through special teams. Kalamazoo generated a shot on each of their two power-plays in the stanza, as well as another shot shorthanded.
A roller coaster of a second period saw the Komets record the first two goals of the contest. A mad scramble in front of the K-Wings net and the puck found itself on the stick of Josh Brittian, who tipped in his 11 th goal of the season.
Capping off an odd-man rush, Kaleigh Schrock (2 nd) extended the Komets lead midway in the period with a wrister from the slot.
Not recording their first shot on net until 7:11 left in the middle frame, the K-Wings made the most of their first attempt, as Kory Karlander (6 th) one-timed an Aaron Clarke cross rink pass to cut the deficit to a single goal.
Snapping a 0-for-22 drought on the power-play, Kalamazoo pulled even later in the second with a five-on-three man-advantage marker from Eric Kattelus (10 th).
Fort Wayne regained the lead midway in the third with perfect pass from behind the K-Wings net from Brittain, who fed Eric Giosa (4 th) in front the crease with 9:19 remaining in regulation.
Ryan Lasch helped the Komets increase their lead to two goals five minutes later by lifting his sixth goal of the year over the shoulder of Joel Martin.
After an empty-netter from Thomas Beauregard (12 th) gave the Komets their largest lead of the night with 1:09 remaining, Kalamazoo’s Adam Polasek would answer 30 seconds later with his fourth goal of the season to close out the scoring.
