MARION, IN. (WANE) - New Haven made the defending champs sweat - but in the end - that's all they could muster. Carmel - the number one team in the final 4A polls - held off a feisty Bulldogs team for a 63-57 win regional championship action Saturday night. New Haven held a four-point fourth quarter lead at one point, but the Greyhounds finished strong.
New Haven needed to fend off rival Northrop earlier in the day in the regional semi-finals - besting the Bruins 65-60. Senior V.J. Beachem put up 19 points in the win, while junior big man Steven McElvene exploded for 24 points, 16 rebounds and eight blocks. In their final games at the high school level, Bryson and Brenton Scott scored 27 and 22 points respectively.
In other 4A action, Warsaw fell in a heartbreaker to South Bend Adams in Michigan City. Joe Beard buried a jumper with less than five seconds to hand the Tigers the 48-46 loss.
