HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Huntington University men’s basketball team has added its third Whitley County product to its roster for next season with the signing of Columbia City playmaker Derek Hinen.

In the throes of his final campaign, Hinen is a key cog for his undefeated Eagle squad.  After earning Honorable Mention All-Conference honors as a freshman, the 6-2 point guard will likely earn his third consecutive First Team selection at the conclusion of his prep career.

As a junior, Hinen led his team in scoring (15.0 ppg), assists (4.0 apg) and field goal percentage (50.8%). For his career to date, the two-time IBCA All-State Underclassmen pick is averaging 9.9 points, 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds.

Hinen, a four-year starter for the Eagles, is on pace to go down in the Columbia City record books for most games played in a career. His talents have also landed him an invitation to the IBCA Top 100 Underclassman Workout for three straight seasons.

"In signing Derek we are adding to what is shaping up to be a fantastic 2013 recruiting class,” said Huntington University head coach Ty Platt. “Derek is a special player. He can handle the ball, makes great decisions, can score in a variety of ways and is a leader.

“His toughness, intelligence and talent make him a perfect fit for our HU basketball program. Derek will have a great career as a Forester."

Hinen will continue his playing career in green and white alongside Columbia City classmates, Drew Benedict and Daniel Woll.
