Van Horn Is State Player Of The Week

    Fort Wayne Canterbury senior Trent VanHorn and Castle senior Blake Simmons headline this week's IBCA/Subway Players of the Week.

    VanHorn averaged 36.0 points over two games, while Simmons tallied 40 points in one game to pace this week's honorees in the awards program overseen by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

    That duo is joined by Tipton senior Mike Crawford, Warsaw junior Nikki Grose, Frankton senior Kelsey Key and Paoli senior Sophie Sears as honorees for the week of Jan. 14-19.

    VanHorn, a 6-3 forward, was recognized in boys' District 1. VanHorn opened his week with 26 points as Canterbury dropped a 65-60 decision to Fort Wayne Snider in a game that game down to the final possessions. He followed with a career-high 46 points in an 89-59 victory over Clinton Christian as the Cavaliers moved to 8-4 for the season.

    The 6-5 Simmons received accolades in boys' District 3 after leading Castle to a 74-59 victory over Vincennes Lincoln in its only game of the week. The University of Evansville signee poured in 40 points with eight rebounds as the Knights improved to 9-4. In the game, Simmons made 14-of-21 from the field, including 4-of-6 3-pointers, as well as 8-of-10 free throws.

    Crawford, a Saint Louis University recruit, was cited in boys' District 2 after averaging 26.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in leading Tipton (14-1) to two wins. First, the 6-5 wing dropped in 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Blue Devils defeated Benton Central 71-39 to clinch the Hoosier Conference title and win their 36th consecutive league game. Crawford followed with 35 points and nine rebounds in a 57-56 win in overtime over Kokomo.

    Grose, Key and Sears were respective girls' District 1, 2 and 3 recipients.

    The 6-1 Grose helped Warsaw (17-0) stay undefeated by averaging 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in victories over Penn and Concord. Grose opened with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a 55-42 triumph over Penn. She then produced game highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Tigers rolled to a 52-21 rout of Concord.

    Key collected honors after scoring 43 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and dealing five assists as Frankton (13-4) defeated Blackford 66-43 in its only game of the week. The 5-9 guard made 14-of-21 field goals, including 4-of-5 3-pointers, plus 11-of-12 free throws. Key is the season's first three-time Player of the Week winner after previously earning recognition for Nov. 19-24 and Nov. 26-Dec. 1.

    The 5-8 Sears was cited after averaging 24.0 points in a trio of victories for Paoli (14-0). Sears started her week with 22 points and four rebounds in a 51-30 triumph over Mitchell. She followed with 20 points in a 65-41 win over West Washington. She then poured in 30 points in a 60-48 decision over Salem. For the week, Sears made 25 field goals, four 3-pointers and 18-of-25 free throws.

    This is the fifth season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the first season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a primary sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its third season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to "play hard and eat fresh."

    Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA's three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 2. Boys winners be selected from now through the week following March 23.
