FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Extended highlights from both the boys and girls games. Interviews with Concordia girls head coach Dave Miller, senior guard Andrea Newbauer and senior guard Lauren Borchelt.
It was a battle of the only undefeated teams in the SAC Friday night at Concordia. The Cadets and South Side entered the night 7-0. A Cadets win would wrap up the conference crown and Concordia would leave no doubt winning 57-44.
In the first quarter, the Cadets defense held South Side to just one field goal opening up a 13-3 lead. The Archers would continue to struggle offensively throughout the first half as Concordia led 27-15 at the break. Andrea Newbauer had nine points for the Cadets.
The Archers would make a run in the third quarter. Jomani Thomas' jumper would cut the Cadets lead to seven, but Concordia always had an answer. Anna Goeglein hit some key shots to keep the Cadets comfortably ahead. Goeglein would finish with 12 points. With South Side shutting down Newbauer in the second half, other Cadets had to step up. The Archers had no answer for Lauren Borchelt who led all scorers with 14 points. South Side's leading scorer, Brittany Johnson, was held to just eight points in the game.
Concordia (15-3, 8-0) has now won five straight. The Cadets will travel to Carroll (9-9) on Wednesday. South Side (13-7, 7-1) has its five-game winning streak snapped suffering the first conference loss of the season. The Archers will travel to Elmhurst (15-4, 7-1) on Friday.
In the boys contest, it was tight, high-scoring first quarter. The Cadets jumped out to an early lead only to see it slip away as South Side's defense created some problems for Concordia. The Archers would eventually pour it on in a rout, 53-30. Rafeal Davis led all scorers with 15 points. Teolia Tillis added 10. Patrick Oetting was the high scorer for Concordia with nine points.
South Side (11-3, 5-1) travels to conference-leading Elmhurst (11-3, 6-1) Friday in a battle for the conference lead. Concordia (5-9, 1-6) travels to East Noble (2-11) Saturday.
