For Bishop Dwenger, Bishop Luers, and Blackhawk Christian the sectional championship game was worth the wait as those three teams advanced to regional play with wins on Monday night.
Originally scheduled for Saturday evening, these three sectional sites had their title game pushed back as not to conflict with Concordia, Luers, and Canterbury playing in their respective girls state title games.
At Harding high school, Dwenger topped Concordia in an all-SAC final to win sectional 23, 65-52. The Saints (14-8) advance to face Wawasee (16-7) in the regional semifinals next Saturday at Blackford high school. Dwenger and Wawasee play at 10 a.m. followed by Elmhurst (16-5) against Yorktown (14-8). The semifinal winners will play for the regional title at 8 p.m. that evening.
At sectional 38 down in Bluffton Bishop Luers handled Adams Central easily en route to a 79-50 win. The Knights (14-9) advance to face Southwood (16-6) in regional semifinal action next week at 10 a.m. at Tipton. That game will be followed by Guerin Catholic (14-10) against Carroll of Flora (13-10). The regional title game will be held at 8 p.m. that night.
Deshaun Thomas led Bishop Luers in scoring with 28 points. He now has 2,984 points for his career, trailing state record-holder Damon Bailey by 150 points.
At sectional 51 Blackhawk topped rival Canterbury 70-45 to win the title. Blackhawk advances to next week's regional at Triton where the Braves (16-7) will face Triton (22-2) at 12:30 p.m. That game follows Bowman Academy (20-1) against Pioneer (12-10) at 10:30 a.m. The regional title game will be held at 7:30 that evening.
