Looking around the gymnasium, you won't find any banners touting the success of the boys basketball team. That's because it's been a while since the Saints have celebrated postseason success.
With a 65-52 win over Concordia Monday, Bishop Dwenger captured the first boys basketball sectional title since 1997 - the first playoff title under head coach and Dwenger grad Matt Kostoff. The berth in the sectional championship a result of a 68-58 upset win over SAC champ Harding in the sectional semis.
Now the Saints are entering uncharted territory.
No player on the team has ever been to the regional level as part of the basketball team. That's why the Saints may rely on some of the postseason experience from some of the football players on the team for leadership.
Bishop Dwenger plays the first regional game in 13 years Saturday when the Saints (14-8) square off against Wawasee (16-7). Coach Kostoff says one player in particular for the Warriors has more three-pointers made than his whole team combined. Wawasee plays a very high-scoring game similar to that of Leo. Wawasee is the fifth highest-scoring team in the state, second in 3A behind only Leo at over 78 points a game.
Saturday's game at the Blackford regional tips off at 10:00 a.m. The winner of the morning game with face the winner of Elmhurst/Yorktown for the regional title at Blackford at 8 p.m.
