FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - In the most highly anticipated game of the opening week of the high school football season in Northeast Indiana, Snider defeated three-time defending 2A state champion Bishop Luers 10-7. The Panthers used a steady ground attack and a suffocating defense to hold the Knights scoreless until the five minute mark of the fourth quarter. Luers had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds, but junior quarterback Quinn Cook was sacked as time expired.
Meanwhile, Bishop Dwenger opened their season with a win despite already being on their third quarterback. The Saints upended South Side 20-7 behind a pair of touchdowns from running back D'Marcus Moon. Quarterback Cody Miller connected with All-SAC tight end Ryan Watercutter, as the Saints overcame some turnover issues to start the year 1-0.
Over at North Side, the Redskins offense exploded late in a convincing win over Concordia, downing the Cadets 54-33. Quarterback CJ Jackson rushed for almost 200 yards to pace North Side. The Redskins host Huntington North next week at Chambers Field.
Tim Martone's Northrop squad begins the season with a loss as the Bruins were stomped at East Noble, falling 40-7. Kalan Adams scored the lone Northrop touchdown on a six-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Second-year Wayne head coach Robert Brown is still seeking his first win, but the Generals were stout in a 33-20 loss to Arsenal Tech out of Indianapolis. The Powers brothers made their presence felt for Wayne, with Keion scoring a rushing touchdown and Dion garnering an interception.
