FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne's Jaylon Smith spoke with legendary linebacker Dick Butkus himself this morning as Smith was selected as the 2012 high school Butkus Award winner, an honor going to the country's best linebacker.
The high school version of the award has only been in existence since 2008. That year Manti Te'o of Honalulu won.
This year Te'o won the college version of the award after racking up 103 tackles and seven interceptions.
Smith will follow in Te'o's footsteps, as the Luers linebacker has committed to play at Notre Dame. Smith led the Knights to their fourth-straight 2A state championship last weekend.
