In an NHC matchup where both teams were in need of a win, it was clear neither was going down without a fight Friday at Carroll as Columbia City edged the host Chargers, 17-11.
Carroll got on the board first with a 25-yard Peter Dager field goal in the second quarter. However, the Eagles defense forces Carroll to punt when Stephen Farrer ran the kick back 74 yards to give Columbia City a 7-3 lead at the half.
The Eagles carried that momentum over into the third quarter. Logan Rehrer scored on a QB keeper to put Columbia City on top, 14-3. The Chargers would not go away quietly though.
Carroll junior quarterback Cam Wisley punched in a short touchdown run, then tacked on the two-point conversion to cut the Columbia City lead to 14-11.
The Eagles would add a 37-yard field goal by Justin Sims to round out the scoring at 17-11.
Columbia City's defense forced five turnovers in the game, three from turnovers on downs. Rehrer was 11-20 for 62 yards passing with a touchdown to go along with 31 yards rushing and a score. Chip Maples had 93 yards on the ground for the Chargers while Wisley was 6-22 passing for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Columbia City (2-6, 2-4) hosts Norwell (7-1, 5-1) next week while Carroll (2-6, 1-5) travels to DeKalb (1-7, 0-6).
