Bishop Luers Earns Three-Peat!

Knights win 10th state championship

Bishop Luers dominated Evansville Mater Dei in the 2A state title game Friday night at Lucas Oil Stadium as the Knights won 41-17 and earned their third straight championship.

Luers scored in the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run from junior Jaylon Smith to take a 7-0 lead.

Mater Dei would answer early in the second with a 27-yard rushing touchdown from Dane Mauer to tied the game up.

Senior James Knapke would lead a drive that ended with a 12-yard touchdown pass to junior Michael Rogers to give Luers a 14-7 advtange midway through the second quarter.

A 33-yard scoring run by Tyvel Jemison with 2:22 left before halftime would up the Knights' lead to 21-7 at intermission.

Nick Morken and Smith would each score rushing touchdowns in the third quarter to put the Knights up 35-7.

Mater Dei would tack on a field goal late in the third quarter but Rogers would haul in another touchdown pass from Knakpe midway through the fourth to up the lead to 41-10 en route to the win.

Smith ran 15 times for 130 yards and two scores. Knapke completed 17-of-25 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Rogers hauled in five passes for 38 yards and two scores.

Luers wins its 10th overall state title in football. That ties the Knights with Indianapolis Chatard for most championships in state history.

Head coach Matt Lindsay also earns his ninth state title, tying him for the most in state history with Sheridan's Bud Wright.
