2 convicted of killing Wayne State football player

DETROIT (AP) — Two men have been found guilty in the 2011 shooting death of a Wayne State University football player outside a downtown Detroit nightclub.

A jury on Friday convicted Quintin King of first-degree murder and six counts of assault with intent to murder. Anton Blevins was convicted of second-degree murder and six counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 12.

Cortez Smith was shot twice during an argument between two groups of men in the club's parking lot. A 25-year-old man was wounded.

Robbie Smith said his son was helping a friend.

Cortez Smith was a junior at Wayne State and majored in criminal justice. He played cornerback for the football team and was the Warriors' defensive rookie of the year in 2010.
