MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State football team (4-3, 2-2 MAC) captured an overtime homecoming victory by defeating Western Michigan (3-4, 1-2 MAC) 30-24 Saturday evening at Scheumann Stadium on a game winning 15-yard touchdown run from Jahwan Edwards.
Offensively Edwards had 23 carries for a total of 138 yards and three touchdowns while senior quarterback Keith Wenning ended the day with 265 yards passing off of 43 attempts and 27 completions with one TD.
The game would come down to the fourth quarter, Ball State took its first lead since the first quarter after an incredible 11-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Keith Wenning to hometown hero senior wide receiver Jamill Smith with :50 left in the contest. The touchdown gave the Cardinals the 24-21 advantage over WMU.
The Broncos marched their way down the field to put themselves in field goal range to set up a 52-yard field goal from Andrew Haldeman with .5 seconds left sending the game into overtime.
Ball State came out in the second half and scored off of a 32-yard touchdown run by Edwards, which made the score 21-17 at the 4:29 mark in the third quarter.
Western Michigan held a 21-10 halftime edge over the Cardinals after scoring two touchdowns one passing, one running in the second quarter. Ball State closed the half with a 34-yard field goal from senior kicker Steven Schott.
A defensive battle in the first quarter, Ball State would be the first to score after an 11-yard touchdown run from sophomore half back Jahwan Edwards at the 9:54 mark.
Western Michigan would then make its way down the field to tie the game 7-7 with 6:59 remaining after junior running back Antoin Scriven's 1-yard TD run.
With 2:52 on the clock, sophomore corner back Eric Patterson intercepted the ball at the Broncos 1-yard line. The interception marked Patterson's second of his career and the season.
The Ball State football team continues Mid-American Conference action Saturday at Central Michigan, with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
