FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Talk about getting out of the gates fast, the University of Saint Francis wasted no time knocking the hope out of Goshen College with a 20-0 start that led to an 89-37 conquest of the Maple Leafs on Saturday afternoon at Hutzell Athletic Center.
The Lady Cougars scored 15 points off 11 GC turnovers in the first 3:46 to bolt to that 20-0 start. Sam Hawk finally got the Leafs on the board at 15:40, but USF raked the Leafs with an 8-0 run to expand the margin to 28-2 after a Kayla Drake 3-pointer at 15:40.
USF won its seventh consecutive game to improve to 22-2 overall, 11-1 in Crossroads League play. GC is 2-22 overall, 0-12 in CL play.
The Lady Cougars led 51-22 at halftime and GC didn't score in the second half until the 12:09 mark on a free throw. The Leafs didn't bag their first basket in the final 20 minutes until Jo'Mani Thomas nailed a 3-pointer at the 6:26 mark in the second half. Thomas' bucket cut the defict to 82-29 with 5:41 to play.
No. 6 USF resumes play at Taylor on Wednesday night in Upland, Ind., at 7 p.m.
